Sources of CLS Problems
Common Problems Opening CLS Files
MiKTeX Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open CLS Files" when trying to open your CLS. Usually, this is because you do not have MiKTeX for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your CLS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CLS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect MiKTeX Version
Sometimes your installed version of MiKTeX won't support your LaTeX Document Class File file. If you've got the wrong version of MiKTeX installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a LaTeX Document Class File file version that was created by a newer version of MiKTeX than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your CLS file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening CLS files are due to having the wrong version of MiKTeX installed.
Other CLS File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right MiKTeX version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening CLS files. If you are still having problems opening CLS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- Windows Registry CLS file paths that are incorrect
- Corruption of the CLS file description inside the Registry
- Corrupt install of MiKTeX or other CLS-related program
- File corruption affecting your CLS file
- Your CLS has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to CLSs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your LaTeX Document Class File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
