Troubleshooting Problems Opening GEOJSON Files
Frequent GEOJSON Opening Issues
Notepad++ Not Present
When trying to open your GEOJSON file, you get the error "Can't Open GEOJSON File Type". Customarily, this means that Notepad++ is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your GEOJSON file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another GEOJSON-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Notepad++ is Out-of-Date
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Notepad++ installed that's incompatible with your GeoJSON File type. You will need to download a newer version of Notepad++ if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your GeoJSON File file was created by a different (newer) version of Notepad++ than what's installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your GEOJSON file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening GEOJSON files are due to having the wrong version of Notepad++ installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening GEOJSONs
You can still experience errors opening GEOJSON files even with the latest version of Notepad++ installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening GEOJSON files. Other contributing causes:
- Windows Registry GEOJSON file paths that are incorrect
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry GEOJSON description
- Invalid installation of a GEOJSON-associated program (eg. Notepad++)
- Your GEOJSON file is corrupted (issues with your GeoJSON File file itself)
- Your GEOJSON is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your GEOJSON file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your GeoJSON File file successfully
